Through the photovoice approach, Caron Toshiko, as the photovoice facilitator and photobook editor, experienced firsthand how our friends in Bima articulated life experiences that had previously silenced them in the face of injustice. Their visual narratives serve as a form of resistance against systemic dominant representations. Here, photovoice provides a space for their voices to be heard and acknowledged, opening the possibility for transformative change.
(Ka)Lembo Ade presents the work of 14 peace initiators from Bima. Their stories invite readers to listen to experiences ranging from a youth migrating to provide food on the table, a last resort after the dwindling job market and opportunities in their homeland, the struggle of single mothers as migrant laborers and the impact on children left behind, the fates of children left behind by parents working as migrant farmers, and the use of and the violence against the female body, which functions as a political tool, as well as the stigma surrounding divorce and the construction of “ideal wife”

There is also the journey of a young person leaving an extremist group, the Mbolo Kampo tradition that forms a social bond through carefully-counted, accountable donation, the communal struggle against deforestation and the floods that routinely "knock at their doors” and, of course, portraits of village activists who are at the forefront of environmental advocacy and providence of safe spaces for youths who wish to express themselves.
