Abandoned and Beyond

2025

Abandoned and Beyond invites reader to “experience” the visual narrative of abandoned spaces in Yogyakarta–a provincial city that has undergone major transformations in the last two decades, without offering a final, definitive answer. Instead, Zaki aims to create a space for contemplation, encouraging viewers and readers to reflect, recognise, recall memories, and reconsider similar situations that might be faced in their own cities or any other places they have visited or passed by.

The photobook resonates with its main theme, i.e. abandonment, by not only showing curated urban documentary photographs but also incorporating physical materials with sensory experiences. From plastic waste, used cardboard, and volcanic materials to QR codes linking to recorded soundscapes from these abandoned spaces, readers are invited to touch, listen to and smell as part of “experiencing” the book. This photobook is also a subtle statement about the abandoned spaces we ofter overlook and the sensory elements we tend to ignore in urban environments.
