Ekspedisi Maritim Timur Nusantara (the Eastern Nusantara Maritime Expedition) is a journey retracing history, reintroducing the culture of the Buton people by following the historical maritime trade routes in Eastern Indonesia. Through maritime trade, cultural encounters took place, shaping the formation of new coastal communities. The Buton sailors, known as sailor-merchants, actively navigated the seas since the establishment of the Buton Kingdom in the 14th century. They transported essential goods and natural produce, primarily coconuts and copra, to be traded across various island destinations.

Through this expedition, the Ekspedisi Maritim Timur Nusantara team aims to revive the legacy of Buton sailors in the maritime trade routes that originated from the islands of Eastern Indonesia. The voyage was undertaken aboard Putri Wangi Wangi, a small pinisi vessel built in Wakatobi in 1952. The expedition lasted for one month, beginning when the boat set sail from Wakatobi on 17 March and returning to harbor on 16 April 2015. Covering 700 hours of sailing, the expedition visited 16 islands in Eastern Indonesia–all of which were part of the traditional Buton sailing routes.
