Muhammad Adimaja

2018

Muhammad Adimaja, also known as Cumi, presents his first photography book as a reflection of his perspective on the glittering world of K-Pop–the Mecca of Asian pop music–which, beneath its dazzling surface, is not as flawless as it seems.

Cumi is a member of the loud Seattle Grunge generation, influenced by bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and of course Nirvana. His passion for music began with his family, as his uncle was the lead guitarist of Geronimo 2 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

In this project, Cumi sought to connect the elegance of K-Pop with a stark contrast–another defining element of Korea: the rigid and deadly Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ). During his visit to Panmunjom, a border area between the two sister nations–North Korea and South Korea–divided by opposing ideologies, Cumi discovered the hidden emotional ties that still connect them.
